A mob stormed into a Tuscaloosa area building at dawn demanding the key to Henry Pratt, a Black man accused of assaulting a white girl. The sheriff resisted with a shotgun and refused to hand over the key as the mob withdrew.
The open hunting season starts today as sportsmen flock to the woods for ducks waterfowl and game birds. Licenses cost 1 and are required by law. Game Warden Kelly and deputies patrol for violations under the 1901 game laws limiting bag counts on grouse pheasants prairie chickens and ducks.
Aug 15 reports Truxton Warren and Whipple launched here as the swiftest in their class with a 30 knot speed. In Fall River Textile Workers gather for a meeting to discuss a 15 percent wage cut and a possible Sept 3 strike.

In Charlotte North Carolina Governor issued a safeguard order after a mob went to the jail last night to lynch William Munroe. Guards held the mob with Winchesters and threats of another attempt were reported this morning prompting the emergency action.

The Gulf storm that struck the mouth of the Mississippi raged all night and spread along the coast to Florida. Immense damage occurred and some lives likely lost. Twenty five houses were washed away below New Orleans, occupants’ fate uncertain. Communication to the south is slow. full details may take days.
A new building project for a block in the northwest features a lower floor occupied by fine stores with much space already leased to a department store. Upper floors will house offices and halls. Tenants have been told to vacate within thirty days before construction starts.
James Harriott, proprietor of one Madison park blind pie, was arrested by Detective Jack Barck for selling liquor without a license. Police continue to pursue park proprietors of these illegal joints, while the Madison Park pavilion still sells liquors with sandwiches, likely until the superior court appeal is decided.
The steamer Alpha bound for Sausalito caught fire this morning while tying off San Francisco Bay. The vessel was badly damaged before rescue tugs extinguished the flames.
In Boise on August 15 Paul Corcoran the sole Coeur d Alene striker convicted of murder during the 1898 riots was pardoned today by authorities. Corcoran had been serving a murder conviction stemming from the clashes that erupted during the conflict.
City engineer Thomson will address the Renton Mill Improvement club tonight at the Minera schoolhouse about the Cedar river water system and other municipal affairs.
Reports from Pittsburgh and nearby mills show a tightening steel strike with bitterness and possible violence. About 70 workers quit Carnegie Union mill while Wellsville Amalgamated forces reportedly end their participation. Bellaire blast furnace shut by six striking workers.

Inspector Hirooks and other detectives guard the area from Morgan’s arrival to night, with Patrolman Powers on special duty and Private Detective Smith stationed nearby. Mrs Shaffer wife of the Amalgamated association president argues the steel strike harms families especially women who must provide for the home when wages and credit vanish. She notes the crisis is for life and principle, not money and cites shared prayer with her husband and family sacrifices.

The Seattle civil service commission warns that vouchers for city civil service applicants must be signed only by people who know the applicant has lived in Seattle at least one year. A recent case showed a city official signed for an applicant who had lived in Seattle only a few months. The commission will verify residence length and relies on signers to be honest, as the applicant is sworn, not the vouchee.
A Seattle area forecast calls for fair skies tonight and Friday with cooler temperatures. Winds will be fresh from the north to northwest, bringing brisk conditions across the region.
The cruiser Philadelphia reached San Francisco today after a voyage from Samoa with Honolulu transit.

W J Adams a Green Lake minister was arrested yesterday afternoon on arson charges. His preliminary hearing is set for tomorrow before Judge George with bail likely. Adams is a regularly ordained Church of God minister and bishop with a Portland ordination seven years ago. Insurance agent J M Bridgford filed the warrant alleging proof to convict. Adams denies the charges. Neighbors and friends visit him at the city jail as the case proceeds.
