Merchants deny Seattle price hikes for Elks Carnival

Seattle business leaders and hotel managers reject claims of a price gouge during the Elks Carnival. They say stores are maintaining or lowering bedding and furniture prices and that the bureau of information has misrepresented their actions.

Businessmen across Seattle, including Stone Fisher Lane and W D McCarthy, reject any raise in prices during the Ellis carnival. They vow to keep existing pricing, attract out of town shoppers, and dispute a recent article claiming a “hold up” policy. Hotel leaders likewise defend stable rates and denounce the report as sensational.

Convention Fight Over Next Meeting Location

Washington leads Cincinnati today as the Typographical convention debates the 1905 meeting site with Portland making a strong bid. A proposal to halt local papers exchanging advertising matrices is studied and sent to the law committee with a recommendation to draft an amendment abolishing such exchanges.

Public market plan urged by J W Pratt in Chamber remarks

J W Pratt owner of the White River Journal urged a Seattle public market plan this morning. He said farmers and city government cooperation would save money, reduce waste, and benefit farmers and the poor while balancing competition with commission men and grocers.

Market reform shows price relief despite detractors

The plan has worked in other cities and will save consumers money on fruits. Inferior cucumbers sell for 60 cents to $1.20 in Seattle, while in White River valley fine cucumbers rot unsold at 12 cents a dozen. Beattie cherries once sold to farmers at 5 cents a pound but failed at market. California fruit stands sold 18 to 20 cents. George Richter Frank Evans and John Kelly were arrested as vagrants by Patrolmen Carr and eight this morning.
