A heavily armed band dynamited the Missouri, Kansas & Texas express car at Coney I T and robbed passengers aboard the train. The robbers escaped on horses after seizing the engine and mail pouches. the amount stolen is unknown but believed large. An United States marshal and posse pursue.
The Financial News bureau reports that President Schwab of United States Steel told friends he believes a speedy strike collapse is near. The circulation notes higher steel stocks as a result. Reports from Pittsburgh and McKeesport describe strikers willing to return to work, with Amalgamated officials optimistic about developments. Picketing remains orderly and no violence reported.
W. W. Phalan has just opened a grocery store in Columbia. He left the doors unlocked by mistake, and upon returning this morning found the shop scattered and looted. Insiders hint that some people may go without groceries for a period.
Aug 14 Tacoma reports the town braces for an Elka takeover within hours. A signal to fire alarm bells will unleash pandemonium as whistles horns and cheers erupt and the first tumult follows.
The murder of Edward Grossman of Manchester Michigan, reportedly struck by a train, is contradicted by a Cincinnati hospital dying witness Medier. He alleges Grossman was tortured at a paper mill in Franklin D with a rope and beam to fatally fracture his skull, then transported to a railroad track to fake an accident. Detective from Cincinnati has arrested Geo Stage near Franklin in connection with the case.
Ed Moore, described as a suspicion, was jailed by Detective Barbee last night, according to police reports. The investigation remains active with Barbee overseeing the case.
Chicago reports a Morgan led $200 million coal trust demands absorption of Indiana’s $15 million soft coal trust before winter. If refused the Morgan group would ship West Virginia Pennsylvania and Kentucky coal into Indiana markets, pressuring local miners and spurring secret director meetings. Railroads hold or break ties as they watch this surge.
Divers found two gold bars worth 25 000 dollars this morning as part of the Belby Smelter vault theft recovery. The total 100 000 dollars stolen remains largely missing with no further refined gold recovered. Jack Winters is identified as the alleged suspect in the burglary.

The Kaiser Wilhelm and King Edward led the imperial cortege to the mausoleum beside Emperor Frederick, as mourners prayed in quiet ceremony. A Washington Street saloon visited by laborers led to a theft report after a man with no money spent it all. A negro porter named Bernard Scott and bartender Fred Bassler were arrested by Officer Mayon on suspicion of involvement. Scott is said to have a bad reputation.
Co. F. Babcock reported two valuable horses stolen from his stables near Mt Vernon. Ed Wells, the county sheriff, is pursuing the alleged thieves and investigating the case.
William Steffen, proprietor of the Madison Park pavilion, was fined 25 dollars and costs for selling liquor contrary to city ordinance by order of Chief Sullivan. Judge George approved a $100 bond to compel obedience until the superior court hears the case.
In Chicago on August 14, Cadillac was disqualified for cutting too close to the Canadian boat at the start. The Invader was awarded the race after Cadillac protested and continued, finishing the leg despite the ruling.

Thieves won entry at 168 Yealer Way last evening taking overcoats skirts shoes and shirts among other items. They reportedly entered during a fight and seized what they pleased. The burglary was reported to police this morning.
First Lieut. T. Abbott has been detailed by the war department to go to Puget Sound and serve as military instructor at the University of Washington in Seattle. Born in Maine, he joined as a private in 1860 and rose to first lieutenant by 1867, later retiring from duty.
George O Brien, accused of multiple murders, tried to end his life aboard the Humboldt by striking his head against cells walls and suffocating himself with a handkerchief. Dawson passengers report he was found unconscious and resuscitated.
Judge George found B Denny a Van Anselt dairyman guilty of watering milk and fined him $10 plus costs. The appeal lowered bonds to $60. City milk inspector Woodcock sampled the milk and Co. EB Bogardus analyzed it, finding evidence of watering and the milk below standard.
Harry Hayner a street fakir was arrested for peddling without a license. J N Varnoamer was arrested for carrying concealed weapons. James Pready a glass blower was arrested for begging. Jim Merrill was sentenced to 60 days on the hospital boat Idaho for drug use.
