In St Trond Belgium residents fled in panic as reports spread that German forces were advancing from Tongres. Terrifying stories circulated of civilians shot for resisting or disobeying orders as the enemy pressed forward at the front.
London dispatch reports a massive early clash across 60 by 100 miles of Eastern Belgium with German forces engaging Belgian French and British troops. Artillery fire roars from Maastricht toward Tongres and Lille while Liege to Longwy and Verdun fronts see heavy fighting as German troops push toward Brussels. The Times predicts up to 1,000,000 German troops with nearly 6,000 guns, warning of a catastrophic collision in modern history.
