The Paris Metropolis tunnel fire killed and smothered many as 45 bodies were recovered by 7 am with 37 more later, including men women and children. The death toll rose as investigators fear further collapses, and artist Sandillon was among the dead.
Four favorites won at good odds at the Meadows yesterday with outside bets offsetting early poor odds. Reta H won the only harness race, a 20 close pace for a $49 purse. Races featured Col Bogey, Rasp, Misty's Pride, and Pride in selling events with notable payouts and betting interest. Justice George obtained a warrant for Net Johnson on charges of obtaining money under false pretenses from a secondhand dealer.
In federal court Mrs Bur cham sought 5.68 damages after a fall into a pole hole on Twelfth Avenue. The case previously awarded $48 by a judge but the defendant, Posa Hunect Telephone and Telegraph Company, won a new trial.
The thirty-third annual session of the state council of the United American Mechanics opened in Syracuse New York with good attendance. Proceedings began with exercises this morning under local council auspices and included conferring of honors.

The Humboldt arrived with news of five deaths and a fierce storm endangering the Cottage City. At the Treadwell mine on August 6 a cable broke as a dump truck fell through timbers killing three and injuring two. John Stanley and Patrick Comer, drowned near Haines, were among the dead, with Comer later buried at Skagway. Identification of a young woman who took part in races and visited the Tenderloin area and then attempted suicide at the Auditorium hotel last night is Mary Lytle. She is niece of Mrs. Carter B. War rants issued against officers of more than 100 clubs in Chicago for keeping unlicensed saloons. Clubs named include Chicago Athletic, Steam Engineer, Columbia Yacht, Marquette and Willneis Bwedieh Glee clubs. Mayer Harrison ordered police to arrest all with warrants and use wagons if resisted.
The Washington Supreme Court denied the writ of certiorari sought by Favorite saloon proprietors in Bremerton. The decision upholds the Bremerton city council action revoking licenses in the navy yard town, effective permanently, with the case on appeal from the superior court slated for October. The court noted it would be inadvisable to permit the saloon to operate as its license expires in October before merit hearings.
