James J. Gallagher told Hoboken police he shot New York Mayor William J. Gaynor on the Kaiser Wilhelm der Grosse deck after being deprived of his bread and butter. He said Gaynor took his job and two dollar night wages, and that he sought revenge after learning Gaynor would sail to Europe. Gallagher, a widower with four years city service, was hospitalized for Gaynor identification before being jailed.

Hoboken New Jersey reports that Big Bill Edwards street cleaning commissioner of New York and a football figure was wounded by a bullet fired at Mayor Gaynor. Edwards arrived at the hospital with the mayor and noticed blood dripping from his sleeve. The bullet penetrated the fleshy part of his arm causing a slight wound.
