Allied forces renew large scale attacks on the crown prince's armies along the Vesle Aisne front and smash toward the heights south of the Aisne. British and French advances widen from Hangard to Grivesnes while Americans shift roles north of Montdidier. Haig reports gains in Flanders.
United Press dispatch reports Marshal Foch launching a new drive east of Amiens to create a salient beyond the Avre while Hindenburg weakens between Montdidier and Amiens. The plan aims to seize the key Amiens railway line, shorten German contact, and threaten a Marne-like disaster for Germany if Haig advances.
A dispatch from France reports American and French troops driving toward the heights between the Veale and the Alane along the Soissons Kheims highway. Desperate counterattacks fail as allied artillery holds gains and pushes on with bridging material rushed up along a wide front north of the Veale. Roosevelt grave found in Chamery wood by American airmen, to be honored.
Allied forces pushed from Morlancourt to Moreuil across the Somme front with several thousand prisoners reported. Tanks and "whippets" led the advance as French and British troops attacked in clear weather, though rain risk grows and German bombardment is described as light.
British troops reported to have seized several villages in their Picardy drive including Moreuil Antoine and Aubercourt. Heights south of Morlan court and west of Cerisey were also said to be taken in the afternoon report from London.
American forces advance in the Vesle sector as General Bazoch reports troops crossed the Vesle and reached the Rheims-Soissons highway. Counterattacks were repulsed under heavy fire.
Secretary McAdoo, en route to Washington from California, said the next Liberty Loan amount would be designated immediately upon his arrival. He stated he is feeling fine and recovered his voice and is ready to go to the mat.

Seattle residents injured while coasting down paved city streets cannot sue the city for damages. The Washington Supreme Court in Olympia ruled that the city bears no responsibility when patrols fail to stop people from engaging in illegal activity and harming themselves.
A 1920s proposal urges the federal government through the railroad administration to acquire all rolling stock used for transporting meat animals and to run stockyards as public markets. It also calls for national ownership of refrigerator cars and for central wholesale markets at distribution terminals to ensure open, fair pricing.
The Federal Trade Commission urges transferring stockyards storage houses and packers facilities to the railroad administration. It says five major packers Armour Cudahy Morris Swift Wilson dominate supply and demand and recommends federal ownership of cattle cars to break their power. The plan would leave slaughtering to packers while railroads run transport storage and distribution.

City council met Thursday to pass an ordinance authorizing purchase of street railway cars. It appropriates funds from the general fund to the street railway fund as a loan and allocates waterfront money to construct water mains on Alkiave.
Paris reports a continuing long range bombardment on the city. The August 8 update notes ongoing shelling and no immediate respite for residents amid the siege.
Allied forces push toward Vologda after capturing Archangel where 8,000 enemy troops were defeated and stores and two batteries captured. North of the Gulf of Finland about 50,000 Germans are reported concentrated for hostilities. Vologda lies 400 miles south of Archangel and 350 miles east of Petrograd.

Chicago reports a final break in the 100 degree heat wave after a night described as among the most oppressive. The heat had caused eight deaths in 48 hours as residents faced extreme humidity and high temperatures.
The American steamship Merak, of 3,025 tons, was shelled and torpedoed by a German submarine at 1 50 p m on August 6, 15 miles northeast of Diamond Shoal lighthouse off Cape Hatteras. The Navy Department announced the sinking.
Superintendent J. D. Ross orders two 1,000 kilowatt motor generators for the substation feeding the city cars on the new municipal elevated line. He also recommends purchasing 32,236 square feet on Spokane avenue for the substation, with generators costing 17,000 dollars each.
Ninety-five young women have joined the King County Council of Defense drive to train as volunteers for the WA S Nurse Reserve. Officials push to fill the 150 volunteer quota before the campaign ends August 11.
Swarms of allied battle planes aid marching Franco British forces as they drive toward Moreuil and Morlancourt. Despite haze, tanks press the line along the Avre and infantry advance with machine guns and cannon across a hilly, tree free terrain.

London bulletin confirms a dawn assault by Haig's Fourth Army and the French First Army on a wide front east and southeast of Amiens with early reports of progress.
