Col Theodore Roosevelt delivers a forceful keynote promising direct democracy tools like primaries and recall to empower the people over courts. He urges living wages and safety rules, worker protections for women and children, farm aid, and cooperative farming while calling for regulated industry and tariff support.
At the national progressive convention in Chicago delegates warned of a clash over the provisional committee’s unseating of a negro delegate. The credentials panel backed the ruling, while no Southern delegate had yet been seated. A rules measure would base future representation on one delegate per 10 000 progressive votes polled.
In Oakland California on August 6 Mayor Mott and Commissioners Turner Bacchus won recall votes by large margins. Mott 17061 against 10937 recall. Turner 16856 against 11011 recall. Bacchus 17453 against 10094 recall. Women voters aided retention. Also Ed Bereth and Gijlia Da Flong forfeited 20 bail each for speeding motorcycle charges.
Milwaukeee August 6 Miss Leonore D Cowker a wealthy animal lover begins duties as city dog catcher and pound keeper by her own request. The city order requires all strays to be seized within 90 days and she will use her private automobile for the work.

Chicago August 6 Miss Jane Addams head resident of Hull House and Illinois delegates to the national progressive convention will second Theodore Roosevelt’s nomination on Wednesday. She will become the first woman to speak as a delegate in seconding a presidential nomination at a national convention.
In Chicago on August 6 Col. Roosevelt met with Mrs. Roosevelt and a suffrage delegation led by Jane Addams. Negro progressives from Arkansas gathered and urged a final Roosevelt ruling on the Negro question.
Acting on Seattle police advice Medford officers seized Archie Dosborne also known as L C Smith at the Hotel Medford on a grand larceny warrant tied to a mining deal. He claimed innocence and said he would return to Seattle within days. Meanwhile at Havre the Seamen's union ended a long strike as workers resumed at all other ports.
