Washington August 5. Representative Rodenberg Republican introduced a resolution demanding an investigation of Cleveland H Podge New York millionaire visit to Secretary Lansing before a par ral battle. Rodenberg alleged the day after the meeting Lansing announced the arms embargo was raised and Carranza would be allowed to import 1 000 000 small arms. Dodge is a member of Phelps Dodge Co and Rodenberg claimed he contributes heavily to the democratic campaign fund.
Moore and three Seattle associates won seats on the executive board of the Washington Automobile Chamber of Commerce during a session in this city. CC. L. Moore of Seattle was chosen managing secretary, with P. E. Sanda H. P. Grant and W. A. Wicks also elected to the board.
A $10,900 purse lures 14 drivers for a 300 mile race at Tacoma’s Montalmarathon Golden Pot latch classic. Ralph De Palma and Barney Oldfield lead the field in Mer and Delage cars amid swift rivals from Wilbur De Allen to Eddie Rickenbacker. 30,000 spectators expected as speed records loom and the big race starts at 2:15.
In New Orleans three Fernandez brothers married within three days and in the same month. Mervyn 19 wed Bertha Winningkott, Everett married Stella Goodwin in Gretna, and Bart wed Violet Counchaldia at St Patrick's. Ada Fernandez directs the family household as Ethel Fernandez, 17, remains unmarried.

Chicago police detained nine women over the late night shooting of Russell Boyee found in water near a wooded island off Jackson Park. Boyee, shot near the heart, was taken to a boat where a trembling woman pleaded for help, claiming the slain man was a friend. Evidence points to jealousy as a motive. Boyee's condition remained serious as investigators questioned witnesses including Maud Sacks who identified herself.
A committee of Great Northwestern Telegraph Co. employees interviewed Attorney General Hudson and decided strike breakers who arrived as undesirable aliens may be deported. Most strikers plan moving to the United States to ease operator shortages. In July, 34,458 bathers used Seattle beaches with Alki Beach leading at 13,210.
Prudence of the Parsonage follows five girls Connie Fairy Lark Carol and the narrator Prudence as they outline hopes from professor to author nurse and missionary. The weekly novel begins Monday and ends Saturday, detailing their dreams and Prudence raising them.
Supreme court rules Sheriff Bob Hodge must pay Ole Hanson $250 on a note from 1912 plus costs totaling $320 after Hanson won a judgment. Hodge had assigned wages to a bank to dodge garnishment, claiming the money was a personal gift.
Major Jones bailiff in Judge Ronalds court urges all former King County superior court jurors to Woodland Park for the jurors picnic next Sunday. He asks everyone to bring their own basket lunch and print the notice two or three times so all jurors see it.
John Boyd the druggist at Seventh Avenue and Union Street announces to customers that pineapple sodas are back in stock. He says the pineapple container has been recovered and notes Sergt. Putnam had it logged at police headquarters.
The Seattle Chamber of Commerce filed vigorous protests with the Interstate Commerce Commission against the new coast to coast freight tariffs. A hearing is set for August 14 to review protests from Pacific Coast and interior cities and to address doubled rates for canned fish and other goods. The chamber argues the rates exceed the commission’s intended adjustments after the Panama Canal closure and wartime demand, urging a return to normal conditions.
Supt. A L Kempster of the traction company says the Oakland Interurban line will not be copied in Seattle. The California firm installed a second conductor on one car to answer questions help women on and off and amuse babies. He adds that Seattle has no need for such lines or extra babies.
E. H. Willard of 4502 30th Ave. 8 W. suffered painful burns to his hands when he attempted to extinguish a fire at his home at 3 30 a m Saturday. The blaze, caused by an overheated stove, caused 200 dollars in damage.
A special act promotes M. C. Butler posthumously from major to lieutenant colonel for his death at Alpine Texas. Butler was killed in a double tragedy with Mrs. Spannell caused by Henry J. Spannell. The promotion in effect July 1 raises Butler’s widow’s pension accordingly.
J E Galbraith III, president of Galbraith Bacon & Co, is seriously ill with acute heart affection but rested easier Friday night. Once a Seattle school board member, he is cared for at his home 1729 17th Ave.
Paris Aug 5 Germans launched furious assaults on the Verdun front aiming to recapture Thiaumont wood and drive French from Fleury. The war office said counter assaults were checked with heavy losses and that the German effort to retake the Thiaumont redoubt failed as the French repelled multiple attacks amid renewed artillery and bayonet fighting.
German forces mass troops and guns on the Eastern front under Von Hindenburg for a major counter offensive aimed at stemming the Russian advance toward Kovel and Lemberg. Field Marshal Von Mack joins Von Burg. Austrian crown prince leads Galicia operations as battles unfold along the left bank.
Jane Gleason, 55, fired four times at a man near 24th Ave and Hanford St, missing all shots. She claims Cornelius Minkema struck her. Gleason is free on a 50 cash bond on a dangerous weapon charge. arrest by Constable Shannon and Officer Dahnken.
In Portland on August 5 the Knights of Pythias concluded their 29th biennial session by selecting Detroit as the convention site for the supreme lodge in 1918.
London Aug 5 Gen Haig reports on the Somme offensive last night with Australian and new army troops capturing second line positions north of Pozieres. Several hundred German prisoners taken. The assault was described as completely successful with repeated German counterattacks repulsed and heavy German losses.
A four faced lantern with a gong is tested at Third Ave and Union St as Seattle police pilot a new crossing system. Officer William Carr operates a lever to signal traffic in four directions with lights and gong prompts, switching north south and east west with alternating go ahead signals. Inventor W F Schlegel of 409 Fifth Ave North develops the device and it is being tested at a busy city corner.
