Aug 5 reports show Standard Oil officials clashing with government over a fine. Rockefeller and Archibald defend the company saying the public will suffer if the penalty is paid, while critics argue the industry profits past public costs.
Jeff Denton of Southeast Seattle testified in court claiming a man named John Dicka or Dickson assaulted him, leaving his face chalked and bandaged. The suspect was arrested and charged with assault and battery this morning.
Frederick Bouley a 42 year old well known Alaska field operator died yesterday in Providence hospital from cancer. Bouley went to Alaska in 1888 and spent most of his years in northern districts. He came to Seattle last July. Funeral services were held at 1 pm from the Church of Our Lady of Good Help with burial in Calvary cemetery.
The victory monument honoring Commodore Oliver Perry was unveiled at Victory Park Put-in-Bay in heavy rain. A naval parade preceded the ceremony. Vice President Fairbanks spoke on Perry’s triumph and a ball tonight will honor Fairbanks and his wife.
The board of equalization meets to consider raising real estate taxes county wide. Members include Chairman D R Abraham, Rutherford, Heckingham, Assessor Parrish, Treasurer Gormley, Councilman Hard, Seattle lawyer, and County Auditor Agnew. Downtown property could face heavy reassessment. Meeting adjourned to 16 o clock tomorrow.
R A Brooks of 664 Nichel son et Ballard faced arraignment after allegedly throwing kitchenware at his wife. The judge freed him to avoid harming his wife and four children, citing the family's need for necessities.
The trial of Louis Quinne in San Francisco has been postponed to next Monday by Judge Wior, per United Press dispatch.

Ana Davidson age 19, daughter of Mr and Mrs F H Davidson of 1428 Eighth Ave, drowned while surf bathing at Westport with a group. A search for her body continued. companions Lucile Schroeder Carrie Welliver Mere Edwards and daughter were swept away but rescued. Schroeder was unconscious for a time.
An important meeting is set for Friday, August between the A Y P executive committee and the Washington state commission appointed by the governor. They will decide the state exhibits and finalize plans for the state building and the forestry building for the big fair.

In Dayton Ohio Anna Murkowits daughter of a pawn broker was murdered near the Old Soldiers home. Abe Cohen a traveling salesman is wounded from a bullet. Bertha Murkowiltsz sister of the dead woman is alleged to be the killer and has fled. Jacob V James and Hertha Murkowiltz siblings of the victim are under arrest as police suspect a Cohen and Anna pursuit.
Norfolk Va Aug 6 Three brothers Edward G Herbert John J Garrett and Clifton Garrett sons of G T Garrett of Newport News were drowned when a gasoline launch they rode was struck by a barge and run over.
James A. Bunce the deputy sheriff formerly tried and acquitted on opium smuggling asks the federal court to permit paying 1200 duty on the opium and set the goods aside. The move stems from an effort to recover money paid while Bunce asserts he bought smuggled opium to trap smugglers. The British Indian government has raised pensions for native soldiers.
Prosecuting Attorney Mackintosh announced no settlement will halt criminal proceedings against Kiplinger. He will pursue extrajudicial actions and uphold state department requirements to prevent any settlement. Attorney Willi TL Morris, Riplinger’s counsel, declined to reveal his clients or retainers, insisting only that Riplinger did not take city funds and promising his return.
Judge Lan dis entered a formal order permanently enjoining the American Seating company A H Andrews and 25 other members of the Prudential club from further trust agreements. The trust, indicted under the Sherman anti trust law, saw all members plead guilty except the EB H Stafford company which plans to fight.
L. M. Douglas and R. Pasman aged 18 and 17 were arrested in Woodland Park by Patrolman F. H. Risely for disorderly conduct. They allegedly harassed women with lewd and boisterous language and refused to stop after warnings.
Boise dispatch tells how John H. Murphy a Denver lawyer and longtime Western Federation of Miners adviser sacrificed health and life to secure William D. Haywood's release. Murphy lay in hospital through May to final verdict, guiding defense as Haywood’s sentence was overturned.
