Potatoes Build a City in Imperial Valley Colorado
The Imperial Valley in Colorado grows rich on potatoes and alfalfa. The Union colony, founded by N. C. Meeker, transformed Greeley into a bustling center of farming wealth. Five years' water battles and grasshopper fights gave way to large potato shipments and rents around 75 dollars an acre. Local farmers use Paris green to combat the Colorado beetle as yields climb and a newspaper boom blooms.
