Leaseholds on State Land Taxed Rise in County Revenue Sparked by Board Decision
The King County Board of Equalization, urged by Councilman Mullen, agreed to study taxing leaseholds on state lands as personal property. The move, unprecedented, could boost revenue from private leaseholds on tide, shore, and school lands. If courts or Legislature challenge it, the city and county plan joint action. The board will assess real estate values and notify leaseholders of tax increases while preparing to hear complaints next Monday.
