An unknown man tried to seize the 16 year old daughter of N G Gorrie at Nob Hill avenue. He jumped from bushes, covered her mouth and eyes, and attempted to throw her down. She escaped, crying out, and the assailant fled. Police notified. a description is available.
Chicago politicians from both parties say the Democratic and Republican national conventions will likely skip the city. They note Kansas City and Denver as favored sites and warn that if Chicago does not bid, other cities will be chosen. National Committeeman Jamieson favors Denver for the Republican gathering.
Aur 1 J 8 Hines from the agricultural department reports grasshoppers are mainly in Bolivar county. The non migratory differentials caused severe damage at the Dahomey plantation with 00 acres of cotton destroyed and 2 000 acres badly damaged.
Det detectives arrest John Conners at the Dittendorf shoe factory on murder charges. The case centers on a year old sensational St Louis murder of stenographer Charles A. Brant, who was killed after his wife left her husband. George Harding, son of a Long Island millionaire, faced suspicion but was cleared. PM Hellman and Harry Morris were sentenced to 15 years.
New York reports proof from Long Island City that the gas tank explosion did not cause the Paul Jones disaster. Adolph A. Kriewer of Draimier Motor works confirms the tank and a Paul Jones plank with custom house number and tonnage were found by Capt. A. P. Deoulett aboard the Steamer Independence off New Orleans.
Justice Neelen of Milwaulkie suspended the fine for a man arrested on a slot machine charge. The judge noted police allowed open gambling and criticized the chief of police for enforcing the law against gambling house keepers and poolrooms.

Property owners on Highland Drive near Queen Anne Avenue plan a street upgrade featuring a 3 foot parkway, 6 foot sidewalk, 8 foot grass strip, and an asphalt driveway in the center 62 foot width.
