A major fire in Bellingham Washington threatens the residence district and has already consumed the Catholic cemetery. A large gang battles the flames as wind conditions raise the risk of further destruction.
After two months of organizing in Western Washington, the United Mine Workers will convene in Seattle on August 6 to formalize a state structure and press for a closed shop. The Pacific Coast company and Seattle Electric oppose the move, threatening layoffs and discharges in Renton as union efforts grow.

J and Hereld about 40 employed by the city street cleaning department collapsed at work near Third Ave and Union Street at 4 40 this morning. C C Ciseno of 408 Union st saw him fall. he died without a word. Suspected heart disease. Remains taken to Bonney Watson parlors. He had just started city work last evening and resided at Woodlawn Ave and Meadow Place with a wife and two children.
Prosecuting Attorney Mackintosh moved arraigned Herbert Switzer saw bail cut by Justice John E B Carroll from 9000 to 600 and Switzer released on bond. He faces charges of threatening to kill his wife and alleged embezzlement, with Spokane as wanted location. Trial set for August 16.
The emperor dissolved the Korean army this morning. Secret deal led Korean soldiers to clash with Japanese forces, 28 Japanese injured. In Washington, 40 Koreans killed or wounded in a separate report. Japanese casualties lighter as Koreans were being disarmed by Japan.
Prince Ty Jong Oniji, nephew of Korea's deposed emperor, arrives in New York claiming he is marked for assassination and seeks President Roosevelt's intervention to prevent a Japanese seizure of Korea. He says an edict to slay him has gone forth and that police should arrest the first Japanese near him. He warns that the mikado may seize Korea and threaten the Far East.
San Francisco telegraphers meet after the National Executive Committee blocks Small’s strike plan. They call for the resignations of Reidy, Konenkamp and Sullivan.
Bert Miguay a waiter was picked up on the sidewalk at Har Varday and East Pikes last night after overdosing from the effects of poison. He was taken to Wayside Emergency hospital where officials say he would recover. Investigators have not determined if the act was accidental or suicidal.
An enthusiastic Hillman City gathering last night urged A. W. Ware to win the Twelfth ward councilman nomination. Speakers said Ware must secure united support from Hillman and nearby areas to defeat Mike Kelley, the South Park candidate.
Ballard, now the Thirteenth ward, costs the comptroller’s office $1,600 and the police $2,100. Columbia did well in the same line, while West Seattle waits another month for a showing.
G L Case a respected clerk of the Municipal police court died of heart disease while on his way to work. He left his son's residence at 524 Nineteenth Ave and collapsed a short distance away. Survived by wife, three sons, two daughters and three brothers. He was a Civil War veteran and former commander of Miller's Post G A B and past master of Home Lodge F and A M. Funeral likely Sunday.
A Beattie city committee asks Twelfth and Thirteenth ward councilor candidates whether they support direct legislation charter amendments. Replies are due by Friday, with nonresponse counted as a negative. Amendments would require popular vote on ordinances and restrict street franchises for ten years.
Mire Ade L Kiplinger wife of former Comptroller John Kiplinger the 45000 defaulter left Beattie on the 840 Northern Pacific train for Portland this morning. Mrs Riplinger had been in Seattle since July 23 when he registered at the Seattle hotel. She did not talk of her husband defalcations except to those she frequented. She was in Seattle to secure support and funds to keep him away. She visited the Colman block and the hotel and stayed with her father at 2023 Seventh Ave.
At the Woodmen of the World head camp session rates for all members were cut from 10 to 20 cents per $1,000 of insurance. The new year goes into effect January 1908. New dues reduce 10 to 20 cents per month per $1,000 for various age groups. Today’s agenda includes Alaska and Pacific jurisdiction, with Denver to remain headquarters until Portland 1910. A ruling also drops most battalion and regimental offices except the consul general. Tonight a monster initiation at Dreamland rink will open for 1,000 candidates from Seattle and nearby camps.
