Two hundred militiamen with a machine gun shelled the McNally mine near Walsenburg Colorado. Reports say several dead including mine guards and strikers. Officials say militia and guards fired on strikers while strikers claim guards opened fire on their car.
Edward A. Evans reports from Trinidad on the Ludlow death cellar discovery after gunmen attacked the tent colony. He describes charred bodies of women and children, the grisly procession to morgues, and militiamen and mine operators blamed in the violence. The Red Cross aide recounts the wounded car attack and the Levers family escape.
An explosion at a coal mine near Eccles West Virginia entombs 260 miners. The number of fatalities is not yet known and rescue efforts are underway.
Charles C. Royston, an aviator en route from Los Angeles to San Diego, plunged 800 feet at Dominguez. He was found unconscious and died en route to the Long Beach sanitarium.
Augusta Lamb filed for divorce from Herbert Lamb claiming she supported him for five years of marriage begun September 27, 1911. She said she bought him a new suit and secured him a job on a San Francisco boat, but he quit after the wedding. Judge Dykeman granted the decree.
Washington April 28 Government ownership and operation of John D Rockefeller's Colorado mines was proposed in a bill introduced in the house today by Congressman Bryan of Washington.
Report from Vera Cruz notes General Funston ordered troops to land outside the harbor to relieve bluejackets on shore duty. As transports entered the inner harbor A mericans on shore cheered and a crowd of about 1000 Mexicans reacted.
In Trinidad Colorado on April 28 a civil war in a coal mining district threatens vast bloodshed. Miners, many veterans from abroad, rally after the Ludlow massacre with women demanding federal troops. They urge Governor Ammons to call in federal forces to curb the conflict.
President Wilson after talks with Secretary Garrison orders six troops from Fort Russell Cheyenne to Colorado mine strike area to restore order. A federal proclamation will read the riot act and urge all disruptors to lay down arms and leave.
A farewell gathering honored Dr. Van Horn of Plymouth Congregational Church as many from his church and other congregations wished him well in his new field in Oakland California.

San Diego April 28 The first true catastrophe aboard a fighting craft on the Pacific since the Mexican trouble began was reported today from the cruiser Cleveland speeding south. Two crates of grape juice taken aboard after Secretary Daniels ordered liquor restriction for officers were smashed.

Washington April 28 A mediator in the three member panel toward the American Mexican dispute says a settlement appears hopeless. The remark comes amid ongoing talks with no clear progress reported.
A nurse for the Sinnett family took 4-year-old Kermit Sinnett to a friend's home for a visit. She returned with the boy last night after police arrived from Saturday. The nurse was fired. Sir George Doughty, 68, a liberal unionist MP, died in London. Premier Asquith warned gun runners into Ulster they will face severe government action.

The council notes voters backed a commission form of government, accusing the commission of moving away from that result.

Cabin Creek Consolidated Coal Co sent 18 000 cartridges to H Felts Trinidad on Saturday and a machine gun with 16 000 rounds was shipped to H W Krebs on Monday.
Attorney Frank Olsen, based in the Lyon building, took an early lead in the city council vacancy race this morning with four votes. Remaining candidates include J. L. McLean and C. J. France, while Fitz gerald Hesketh Goddard and Hans backed Olsen.
About 900 farmers signed recall petitions aimed at Hamilton and Knudsen after Emamelaw at headquarters reported five hundred names. In Birch precinct 58 of 61 possible signers backed the effort, while circulators faced only limited refusals from road workers and backers of sham resolutions.
