Olympia April 23 The Washington Supreme Court rules 8 to 1 that both the Renick bill and the jitney bus measure cannot be put to a public referendum while emergency clauses in the measures are sustained. The decision upholds emergency provisions in other measures as well and highlights ongoing disputes over referendums and emergency powers.
Police Chief Lang faces sharp criticism from jitney drivers and lawyers over plans to assign more officers to investigate. They argue police cannot arrest for misdemeanors without warrants and that jitney violations are state court matters, accusing Lang of excess zeal in enforcing the law.
Jitney drivers who split from the Seattle Auto Transit Association plan a suit outside the emergency clause to test the bond law.
