A large blaze in K. C. district on April 22 spread quickly, challenging all district fire crews. The fire men fought to contain it as observers feared it could become London’s worst blaze, with several firms reportedly swept. No full control by morning, fire crews remained on scene.
Captain Jurgen reports the vessel Indiana arrived at Cape Mendocino California en route to Puget Sound. The ship signaled it was safely aboard and in good condition after the voyage.
Manila April 22 Court martial will convene on Thursday for General Jacob H. Smith charged with conduct prejudicial to discipline while in command of the Department of Samar. Major Harvey C. Car is the judge advocate. The trial, ordered directly by President Roosevelt, will not be reviewed by General Chaffee and may end Smith’s army career.
Fire crews were called at 2:10 this morning to a rear burning shed at 10% Howell Street. A small blaze in the yard set the building ablaze, with damage estimated at about $8. No injuries reported.
Saloon and slot machine operators press Mayor Humes to fulfill a pledge tied to his 1932 reelection, seeking restoration of slot machines to boost city revenue. Warrants have been issued for the arrest of two men believed to be the ringleaders of a coal theft gang operating near the railroad tracks at the city’s southern edge. They allegedly hire boys to jump coal trains, steal large quantities, and resell the fuel. Policeman Tom Bevan uncovered the operation last night.

Cairo April 22. With no fresh bodies recovered from the burned steamer City of Pittsburg the theory grows that most victims died by fire rather than drowning. Charred bones are said to lie beneath twisted iron and boiler remains. only three bodies found. Survivors have left the area and it may be days before removal attempts resume.
The initial consignments of onions arrived in Seattle this morning from Vancouver aboard the Canadian royal mail steamer Moane. Three hundred seventy eight sacks of Vremetable onions from Australia were unloaded and consigned to a local commission house. A 40 percent import duty applies. Bush & Co. note potential ongoing imports as Australian onion farming expands globally.
Two Afghan peddlers Rasoulkhan and Nassirkahn are suspected of killing Amir Ali Aden Khan. The victim, a Sikh Mereli, was shot in the back and dumped in Lake Washington. Suspects identified by Woodinville innkeeper A Hansen, with Kasoulkhan near Fairhaven and Nagair Khan in Montana. Several others detained as witnesses in the case.
In Olympia April 28 the supreme court affirms a lower court judgment favoring Clyde Garoute and other minor children of Henry C Brouse deceased against Moran Bros Company. Brouse died when hoisting rope broke and scaffolding failed in the shipyard making the rope knotted rather than spliced. Damages totaling 6500 awarded to plaintiffs. costs assessed to Moran Bros. Company.
London officials expect immediate government privileges for a new underground railway with several million dollars from J Pierpont Morgan. Morgan interests merge road-building projects to extend lines, planning forty miles of subway tubing and ninety miles of surface track.
In Washington on April 22 the war department and senate military committee clash widened as Chairman Hawley introduced a bill to boost army efficiency. The plan drops the general staff system and makes the lieutenant general the de facto commander of the United States army, in addition to the nominal rank.
The chamber of commerce will hold a regular meeting tomorrow to discuss the Lake Washington canal committee report from last Wednesday. The Independent Telephone Co accelerates work to put its new Chicago made multiple switchboard into service by May 16. Underground 4,000 feet of lead coated cable laid, director to arrive from the East for installation. The system serves 10,590 subscribers, eliminates intermediate handoffs, and requires no hang up between connections. A new telephone directory is underway and 300 subscribers will adopt the system at launch with four two and one party lines, no ten party lines.
Whatcom April 22 The city council overrode Mayor Mardin's veto by a full vote granting the power franchise to D Mills Alvinia Hayward and P A Cornwall. The mayor condemned the council as dishonest in method. The council replied with a resolution disapproving the mayor's objections and accusing him of trying to discredit the municipal administration.
Ithaca New York April 22 A novel chain letter plan targets beef trusts. Mark Gideon distributes letters urging a meatless week from May 15 as a test of the system s power. The local anti trust league supports the effort funding and coordination.
