Secret Service officers uncover a large counterfeiting operation in Washington aimed at defrauding the government. Investigators say the scheme involved forging currency and distributing passes to undermine federal revenue. No arrests reported in the initial disclosure.
Washington reports reveal a large counterfeiting conspiracy to substitute flawless $100 silver certificates for government funds. The plan targeted a U S sub treasury in the east with arrests in Lancaster and Philadelphia tied to plate work for the forged notes. Authorities promise major arrests and a full exposure of the scheme.
General Lawton marched into Novalindes with little resistance. A small Filipino force was repulsed with few shots. One man from the North Dakota regiment was slightly wounded. Lawton plans a wide detour to round up rebels and halt night guerrilla attacks as he links with MacArthur's forces later. Charleston April 2 The jury in indictments against Lake City men for recent lynchings reported it could not agree on most defendants but found three innocent. The trial ended and jurors were discharged. No immediate plans for a new trial were disclosed.
MEMPHIS VENN April 22. A sensational death by own action occurred today as Col. M. Lewisn Clarke, a famed racing judge, shot himself in the head with a revolver and died soon after. The cause of the deed remains a mystery.
Indianapolis April 22 Ge rtrude Walters once of Robinson Illinois known as Gertrude Walters died by jumping from a workhouse cell to a cement floor below. She had a troubled life with arrests and reformation efforts following a string of assaults on a matron and family troubles. She disappeared from the dining hall after breakfast and leaped to the floor as two inmates on a lower tier cried out.
Mrs. Alter Deweree of Muncie Ind died this morning from blood poisoning that began after a toenail trimming. The infection led to multiple amputations of the right great toe and eventually caused her death.

A party of ten plans to sail from Ketchikan, Alaska, aboard the 25 foot, ten-ton Carrie 8. Davis to develop mining claims on the Alaskan coast. The boat, built last spring, was wintered tied up with a sale notice on the mast. Passengers include Mrs. L W Davis and nine others: Capt Dobbins, Sinclair Elliott, Capt W H Bruce, George L O Connor, J W Montgomery, L Delaney, Silas Livengood, and George Cilf.
The eight insurers covering the ill fated steamer Brixham are slow to pay. Captain James Carrell, receiver of the Boston and Alaska Steamship Company, plans to sue if funds are not forthcoming and will depart soon for San Francisco.
A Campbell Mall and Boweta counties posse hunts a colored man named Hose in connection with the killing of Alfred Crawford at his home and an assault on the fire. Rumors suggest possible capture and execution by burning at the stake in Cranford, with local residents expecting punishment.
The schooner Lizsie Sorenson ready for a Bering Sea cod cruise remained in port due to a belief that voyages should not begin on Friday. Captain Lissins, an experienced sailor, kept the ship docked after a similar Friday departure scare last year near Cook Inlet and Kotzebue Sound.

A rumor claimed the army had reached its quota and local recruiting stations, including Capt. O’Neil’s loreal office, would close. No orders support this. 62 recruits have been accepted, 15 applicants await examination, and 20 men were rejected, largely for intemperance. Discharges continue as new recruits are needed.
Henry Bemus, a German farm hand, was jailed in Batavia after Deputy Howland arrested him in Oakfield on assault in the third degree charges. Andrew Gray, who sought protection for his 20 year old daughter Flora, says Bemus tried to kick his door and may face arson charges after a partly burned straw pile was found against Gray's house. The examination is set for Monday.
Residents heard screams late at night and saw a hack near the bushes. The driver allegedly held a young woman by the neck while she struggled to free herself. He claimed she was drunk and he was taking her home. No arrests yet.
Capt. J. F. Pratt of the coast and geodetic survey leaves for San Francisco to assume command of the government steamer Patterson. The ship sails north next month to survey the Western Alaska coast, focusing on the Yukon river mouth and a wide bar. Golfin Bay channels will be mapped and buoys placed to mark deep water.
In Alameda California on April 2 a romance culminates as Miss Clara Usinger of the city will wed RB Hutchinson a New York financier. Hutchinson came to California to oversee the San Francisco branch and met Usinger when she joined his firm as a typewriter. The bride elect is portrayed as bright and talented with many admirers.
Albert Swanson sues Ed Van der Ven owner and Davi Blake lessee in superior court seeking 1000 damages for injuries from a building explosion on Washington street. Swanson claims a sprained left ankle and injury to the right leg.
Chicago reports a kidnapping case mirroring a prior abduction. Ruth Stonehouse and Hagel Stonehouse, both 6, vanished from 5916 Calumet Avenue a week ago and no trace has been found despite searches by police.
Indianapolis April 22 The Party company the largest in the country declined to join a proposed trust for buggy and light wagon makers. Mr Parry stated that despite record sales last month the firm would not join the combination. The company employs about 2500 workers including 700 at Connersville works.
