Twenty prominent Pilipinos form a junta in Manila planning a conference with Americans to end hostilities. An insurgent recruiting office is raided with three Filipino officers and fourteen recruits captured and confined. General Cortén foresees rapid improvement and near end of war.
The jury in the case of Mrs. L. M. Laurie against the City of Mallard returned a verdict late this afternoon for 1887.00 damages. Advices from St Paul say another large delegation of homeseekers will leave today for the Pacific coast via the Great Northern road. More crowds are expected to depart west next month.
mh. C. Hawkins, general manager, says extensive summer work will make the White Pass and Yukon line first class. Large cargoes of Washington lumber will be sent to Skagway to build snowsheds. The Lake Bennett line is likely to be completed by July 2, a twenty mile stretch with seven miles already graded.
In Seattle, Judge Winsor representing Kate Keefe moves for a new trial after alleged juror prejudice fueled by the plaintiffs attorney who referred to a divorced woman without evidence. Other items include a $1598.55 judgment against Frances Jane Christensen et al and a divorce granted to Fannie Cook from Harry Cook for abandonment.
In Philadelphia on April 12 Meyer Goldsmith the expert accountant spent the day detailing bank records that implicate the defendant. Judge Biddle ruled to exclude transactions predating the indictment. The testimony showed Quay received large loans from the bank with no interest paid.
Washington reports that all soldiers now in United States service will receive twenty percent extra pay when they are mustered out. The policy applies to the entire active force and aims to assist with transition costs after service.
Deputy H W Tyler returned from Spokane with nineteen prisoners sent to the penitentiary and McNett’s Island. All convicted of selling whisky to Indians. most fined $100 and four months, Mittman eight months with $100 fine. One prisoner was found with $178 in greenbacks in a shoe.
NORTH YAKIMA April 11 The city council ordered the marshal to swear out a complaint against ex City Treasurer Henry Pressey charging embezzlement. Pressey’s shortage is now said to be at least 4000 dollars.
The schooner Arthur B. at the White Star dock plans a trip to Golomin bay and St Michaels with a party of about thirty prospectors. Fifteen are in the city already. others are expected from the east. The vessel previously sailed north last summer to Kotzebue Sound to aid miners and returned safely after months away.
Flood waters sweep the Missouri river lowlands for the first time since 1881. Ice has broken away downstream, moving with currents toward farms. The river boat Last Chance was wrecked last night in a total loss.
A severe blizzard rages in the region with heavy snow and poor visibility though temperatures are not extremely cold. Residents endure whiteout conditions as snowfall continues to blanket the area.
Boston April 18 Lee Miggin son and Co bankers report options on fourteen rubber fabric concerns to be merged. Firms include Fast Hampton Plastic Works Glendale Elastic Fabrics Nashawannuck Montgomery Web and others in New England with Bridgeport and Middletown connections. Plan to issue eight million stock two thirds preferred and a working capital of 1.6 million dollars.
Abraham Shaffer of Donaldson Marshall county was fatally stabbed by his son after a dispute over alcohol. The son, who refused to give liquor, produced a pocketknife and inflicted fatal wounds. he is under arrest.
Workers at the wall works in Waeh receive 15 cents an hour and have their wages raised by 10 percent. Those earning over 15 cents gain a 6 percent boost.
A meeting of the Alaska Steamship Association will be held in Vancouver tomorrow to decide whether Alaska young steamers of American companies may touch Sirttiah Columbian ports. If British and American firms fail to agree, Union Steamboership may withdraw from the combine by cutting rates, likely reducing current charges. American firms vow to fight Canadians if this occurs. a representative from each Seattle Steamship company will attend.

A group of United States senators will depart Beattie in late May for a Klondike journey via Skagway, then return by way of Fairbanks. Included are Senators Gray of Delaware, Bacon of Georgia, Gallaher of New Hampshire, Hansborough of North Dakota, Clark of Wyoming, Heitfeld of Idaho, Turner of Washington, and Representative P. B. Gorman of Ohio.
Rev. Hugh W. Gilchrist Mrs. Mary L. Foster and Jerome Catlin were appointed by Mayer Humes as delegates to the National Conference of Charities and Corrections meeting in Cincinnati Ohio May 17. The organization formed in 1878 has met annually since and now has over 1400 members. The conference lasts a week with daily discussions on charity organization dependent children insanity juvenile reform prison reform hospitals and municipal and county charities.
J A Dummett, general secretary of the Y M C A for the Pacific northwest, gave an interesting lecture at the Y M C A room last night. He spoke on the general work of the association and the Y M C A conference at Basle Switzerland last summer.

County Assessor Bailey reports a state auditor opinion that the personal tax exemption law applies this year and takes effect immediately. Exemptions include head of family, $200 total, clothing, beds, household furniture, cooking utensils, and tools. Two coal shovelers, C A Anderson and John Larson, fell twenty feet when a coal chute failed on the wharf, sustaining injuries but surviving as the steamer Al Ki was nearby to avert worse. Anderson and Larson were treated at police HQ, with hospital attention from Dr. M E A McKechnile. Anderson resides on Lake Dillard Avenue near Leschi Park. Larson rooms at Merchants' Hotel.
New York police arrested Albert B. Hell and Frank H. Smith last night for robbing a mail pouch. In their trunks were found carrier uniforms and drafts totaling about $10,000.
Late yesterday afternoon a fire at the Pintsch gasworks in Denver Colorado led to an explosion injuring eight men seriously. The injured include Capt. Patrick Capt Sour wash Capt Moore Capt Walker Nat Seibert Gus Bargemaker John Haley and John Katy all trapped inside during the blast.
HALIFAX April 18 Canadian Trade Commissioner Burke arrived and says anxiety for annexation to the United States is exaggerated. Most people are loyal to England but resent a new tariff raising duties. The deficit claim is disputed and better trade relations with the United States, especially reciprocity, is desired.
