A noon fire at the Gomey Johnson Hat Company in Cleveland swept through a large hat factory, injuring several of the 350 women workers on the top floors as flames spread to adjacent structures. Rescue efforts saved most workers, and the blaze was controlled by 1:30 pm with property loss estimated at one million dollars.
A deaf mute man about 35, recently from Lewiston, Hiaho, threw himself before Engine 10 on the O. BR. N. near Tekoa at noon. The train could not stop. the man was dead when found. No papers were recovered to identify him as the coroner had not yet arrived.
A major logging deal is in the works between Northern Pacific and Mason County Logging. The plan calls for 254000 feet of logs daily from Thurston county’s timber belt, with a new spur from near Little Rock to run ten miles into the timber region. The tract’s timber could last at least ten years at a rate of one million feet per year.
Manila April 15 report that Washington volunteers under Lieutenant Southern encountered a Filipino trench near Santa Cruz. Southern was wounded in the ensuing skirmish as Lawton's forces press forward and American troops are quartered at Talig. Rumor says Calamba bombarded by gunboats and Lawton's expedition landed there.

Dur brow remains confined in his hotel room while police hunt for Porter who fled after the incident. Hotel staff say Porter's luggage was sent away but they cannot locate him.

Emerson, who had been opposed by the Rodgers family for weeks, shot James Rodgers after an argument over river rope and water. Rodgers was hit in the abdomen, then another shot struck the head near the brain as Emerson fled toward Sonora and later surrendered to the sheriff amid frontier anger.
Arrangements for tonight's Dollar Dinner of Chicago platform Democrats are under way in New York. William Jennings Bryan will arrive late this evening and about 3000 people are expected to attend.
