A powder explosion on the battleship Missouri at the Pearl Harbor target range killed 29 sailors instantly and injured five others. Captain William Cowles led a daring rescue as flames ripped through the 12 inch turret and handling room. The Navy released a list of the dead with their next of kin.
Bulletin from Paris cites Russian and official dispatches detailing the sinking of the battleships Petropavlovsk and Pobieda and the destruction of the torpedo boat destroyer Vesterachni during a Port Arthur engagement with the Japanese. Fifty crew saved from Vesterachni.
A Rome dispatch to Central News from Newchwang reports IAPS ready to besiege Port Arthur. The message, dated April 14, describes impending military actions and strategic moves near the port as tensions rise in the Far East.
Reports claim Port Arthur may fall soon as Admiral Togo plans to land troops to besiege the town. The Petropavlovsk is said to have been destroyed by torpedoes after separating from the Russian fleet, amid claims the ship was not sunk by a mine.

Washington reports an explosion aboard the Missouri as the ship returned to port with the dead on deck. Five officers and twenty four men died and two more were not expected to live. The commanding office notified relatives and a complete list of the dead followed.
