In Huttee Montana on April 11 the coroner's jury found night watchman John Warne guilty of murder in the death of little Evelyn Blewett. The verdict says Warne assaulted the girl in the reservoir watch-box, killed her with a head blow, and set the box on fire to hide evidence. Warne is in custody and pleads innocence.
Reuben Wright of Pullman, a Whitman county pioneer who crossed the Plains in 1849, has died aged 102. He was among the region’s oldest and best known settlers.

Vancouver April 11 The disappearance of William Rowan of Miburn was explained by the discovery of his body near the Fraser river mouth. It is believed he fell from a wharf while guarding a store of valuable goods and drowned.

In Memphis Tennessee on April 11 Jack Johnson a railroad man and Hardy Parker a clerk fought a savage knife duel in a secluded city street. Johnson died in a hospital and Parker is reported gravely wounded. A bystander was cut while attempting to intervene and Johnson’s wife witnessed the tragedy.
Detectives Wappenstein and Powers arrested Oscar Hiles Allan B Heilier and C B Greenlee for hotel robberies after finding burglars tools on Biles. Greenlee also known as Horton was captured at the York hotel. Chief Meredith recovered a broken chisel and a jimmy linking the suspects to a prior jewelry larceny in Portland Oregon.
Chairman Lister says the state board of audit and control will relocate to Olympia next week. Temporary quarters will be set in the Stuart block in line with Gov. Rogers’s wishes.
Whatcom on April 11 reports the board of directors of the Bellingham Bay and Puget Sound Railway Co. voted to issue $600,000 bonds to extend the line from Whatcom to Wickersham and connect with the Northern Pacific at the latter point.
James Hexter a Big Four railroad man was badly beaten on Spruce Street by sisters Ida and Laura Cowden and Mrs Jennie Majors with heavy rawhide whips. They claimed he took a diamond ring belonging to Mrs Majore and gave it to another woman. Hexter denies possessing the ring and says he will have the entire crowd arrested.
The Astoria chamber of commerce adopted a resolution urging Mayor to telegram President McKinley with an urgent invitation to visit Astoria during his Western tour. The telegram will be sent immediately.
Claire Strassburg alias Imes alias W Allen, a traveling salesman, is jailed after stealing fifty dollars from Dekalogon's store at 1901 First Ave and returning it. Detective Crane arrested him quickly after the theft was reported. Strassburg admits the act but not its motive. His Seattle record is noted as unsavory.
Eight large cases holding clothing and supplies for the Miquimaux of Attu and other Aleutian islanders have been collected in New York. They will be sent to Seattle for shipment north, with the effort led mainly by Capt. Clark, formerly with the United States revenue cutter service.
