The idlehour country home of William K. Vanderbilt on Oakdale Long Island burned at 4 am. No lives were lost though many slept inside including Vanderbilt Jr and his bride Virginia Fair. Fifteen servants escaped unharmed as the cause is attributed to a furnace pipe in the basement amid surrounding mystery.
Atlanta hits a new public conduct line as the Saturday spitting ban takes effect citywide. Pedestrians mock the law with gags like a suspended spittoon and painted jars, while officials trumpet enforcement yet admit broad noncompliance. Patrols warn citizens to stop expectorating on sidewalks.
Captain Pratt of the United States Coast and Geodetic Survey departs for San Francisco to take command of the patrol steamer Patterson. The vessel will cruise Alaskan waters to conduct surveys and soundings along the coast and adjacent seas.
Steamer Progress sails from San Francisco with coal for that port. Grant loads coal at Madison Street bunkers before a voyage around the Bound. Manaanita leaves for Tulaby Bay to place a buoy near Everett. Occidental loads coal at the south bunkers and heads to San Francisco. J. M. Griffith chartered to load lumber for the Orient. Dode reports F Endeavorer ashore at Foulweather bluff near Port Gamble, possibly to be freed by a tug at high tide. Skagit chartered to load lumber for Honolulu from Port Gamble.
Two cowboys raided the Alma Gordo Lumber camp about seventy miles west of El Paso on pay day. They covered the cashier with guns and exacted about $50,000. A posse began pursuit but had not caught them by nightfall.
Funeral services for Justice Field are set for Thursday morning at the Church of the Epiphany in Washington. Mrs Field has received numerous condolences from across the United States and from foreign ambassadors. The Supreme Court adjourned yesterday but is in session today.
Olympia April 11 Gov Rogers appoints M H Gormley to captain of Company B replacing the late George H Fortson and H J Mousa to first lieutenant of Company H while First Sergeant John Stringer becomes second lieutenant of Company B.

NEW WHATCOM April 1. Prof. E. K. T. Mathes of Lewiston Idaho was elected principal yesterday by the Norman school board of trustees.

They discussed the need for professional judges in architectural contests and commented on the Muliders' association and its legitimate progress.
In the superior court C G Sanborn won a judgment against E W Culver for 182.80. T M Daulton secured 441.75 against Fred E B Sander and wife on a promissory note. The Free Methodist church Puget Sound conference meets at Rosa from tomorrow through Sunday with Bishop K Start of Alameda in charge. Bank clearances today reached 246969.06 with balances at 68790.20.
Four freight cars reached from San Francisco with provisions for Captain Abercrombie’s Copper River expedition. The cargo included 14690 pounds flour, 7841 pounds salt and sugar cured bacon, 160 pounds sugar, 1600 pounds rice, 1000 pounds split peas, 100 pounds hominy, 1264 pounds potatoes, 1000 pounds onions, 129 pounds lard, 220 pounds English breakfast tea, 604 pounds butter, 1200 pounds crackers, 400 pounds oatmeal, and 4 pounds condensed milk and cream.
GQLENDIVE Moent April 11 floods have abated. Remains of those who perished on Saturday have been recovered and funeral arrangements are being made for the victims.
The Municipal court revisited the Quinn family dispute as Dan Quinn faced charges after a prior ten day sentence for driving his wife from their home with a butcher knife. Last night his wife reported he returned drunk and threw her from the float shack into the Bounded water. Judge Cann fined him $20 and ordered possible chain gang work.
Springfield report notes Adjutant General Reece arrived back in the city this morning after a trip to Pana. The brief dispatch provides no further details on the purpose or outcomes of the visit.
Sheriff Downey reports a riot provoked by operators trying to force miners to stay. Militia sent last night remains on duty until peace is assured. Downey says the conflict began as miners attempted to leave their employment peacefully.
Glassblowers in Bridgeton Conn go on strike for union wages and recognition. walkout continues as no satisfactory agreement is reached.
The Chicago Furniture company on Second avenue near University street was nearly destroyed by a fire at about 6:30 this morning. The blaze climbed from the rear roof while a brisk wind fed the flames. Firemen brought the flames under control after about thirty minutes. First floor stock of furniture valued at eight thousand dollars was destroyed. second floor living spaces also lost. Manager G B Caryle blamed a rear stove for the fire. Insurance stood at twelve thousand dollars. The store was the third wooden Second avenue structure burned in two weeks.
Bridgerport, April 11. Nancy Guildford, charged with complicity in the death of Emma Gill whose body was found in a pond, pleaded guilty to manslaughter and received a ten year prison term.
Constable Darrow shot and killed Michael Hammil, a deranged Sunnydale resident known as the Sunnydale maniac, after a confrontation while pursuing him near Sunnydale. Hammil had earlier threatened Darrow and was released from an asylum six weeks ago. An inquiry is planned in Bonney & Stewart’s at Georgetown with body to Seattle for inquest.
The 198 entry kennel show features famous canines including the Queen of Counts English setter owned by H A Wegents of San Francisco. Also dachshunds from that city and four valued fox terriers entered by Rev J W Fein tan from Victoria. A Chesapeake Bay duck dog bred by Mr Callahan is noted for cold water endurance and rheumatism resistance.
Cablegram from General Otis reports Lawton's success at Santa Cruz with 93 enemy dead and city captured without property destruction. Wheaton repulsed insurgents with heavy losses. Minnesota volunteers suffer deaths and injuries near Bocaye. Oregon volunteers ambushed with two killed and three wounded.
General Shafter testified before the board that he heard no complaints about canned roast beef before returning from Cuba. He ate the product himself and found no fault. He noted that if the rough riders had nothing to eat but what they captured from the Spaniards, it was their own fault.
