Conviction of Robert Merchant Opens Way to Prosecute Frauds
The secretary of the National Brokerage Company was convicted yesterday for issuing false accounts to boost stock prices. Prosecutor Mackintosh says he will pursue criminal actions against bogus corporations and fake mining concerns once sufficient evidence is gathered. The ruling marks the first under the 1966 law making false stock sales a crime, targeting wildcat mining schemes exposed by The Star.
