Ringside Havana April 5 reports 38 year old Kansas cowboy Willard delivering a knockout blow in the 26th round to defeat Jack Johnson, ending a long championship run. Johnson tired after round 15, with Willard dominating early and weather and attendance dampening the event.
Gabrielle Darley, jailed in Los Angeles on murder charges for killing her lover Leonard Topp. She had been married to prizefighter Kid Kirby, met Topp through the underworld, endured coercion and abuse, and ultimately killed him after he beat her for resisting his schemes.
Reports from New York state a fierce Atlantic storm over 36 hours sank multiple ships and killed dozens. The Old Dominion line liner Jefferson is overdue near Norfolk. Prinz Maurits with 49 aboard foundered off Cape Hatteras. the Edward Luckenbach and other vessels were lost. Councilman Marble will seek an estimate on a public market at city hall park Third ave and Yester way. Marble ordered the engineering and building departments to prepare figures for the project. In summer travel, Northwestern courtists may stay as long as they wish in each Eastern city visited under a new railroads arrangement. The plan starts May 16 and runs to September 30.
Judge Neterer of the federal court ruled the Seattle Renton and Southern franchise terms binding until the Public Service Commission orders a change. Renton Line receivers sought a rate increase denied by the commission. Receivers then sued to block enforcement of the order. Assistant Corporation Counsel Ralph Pierce calls the opinion a city victory and will move to dismiss the suit.
Mexican Pete Smithers telegraphs from Arizona that he and 100 riders will compete for prizes at the Seattle Stampede and Roundup in Madison Park from July 10 to 17. Twelve carloads of wild horses never ridden will be used.

Paris April 5 German submarines were destroyed and a third damaged in the March 26 raid on the Hoboken naval base near Antwerp. The fire gutted shipyards as bombs exploded, killing forty workmen and wounding sixty two.
London April 5 The British steamship Olivine has been torpedoed by a German submarine. From Portsmouth comes word of the sinking of the Russian vessel Hermes, a three masted ship, whose crew was landed at Portsmouth.
Councilman Lundy proposes an ordinance to revoke the Rathskeller cafe license for dancing where liquor is sold prompting protest from proprietor James Morrison who calls the old law obsolete. The bill heads to the franchise committee with no vote scheduled until next Monday. The article also notes C. J. France resigning from the Municipal League board of trustees as port counsel.
