Seal Beach Salvage for Victory committee began in April with a first sale on April 10. By October 1 it had sold 28,807 pounds iron and 29,393 pounds newspapers, turning funds to the Civil Defense Council and later the Red Cross for wartime needs. A plan was approved to use October sales for pier recreation room improvements and servicemen’s equipment.

Winters Family Returns to Monterey Park Press

Dimout Ordinance Takes Effect After City Council
The emergency dimout ordinance, modeled on state defense guidance and Army Proclamations 10 and 12, is now effective from today. It establishes local enforcement with penalties up to 300 dollars fine or up to three months in jail, or both.

Aldrich Protest to City Condemnation of Peninsula Property
H H Aldrich of 2210 Bay Lane protested the city condemnation of his peninsula property at 2227 W Electric Ave. He argued time to demolish move and sell was too short and a tenant with a ill wife and defense work status refused to move. He claimed to protest any city action and warned of holding the city responsible for damages. The message was filed and sent to the State Housing Division which ordered condemnation proceedings.

Service Men Enjoy New Recreation Room on Pier
City officials and patriotic citizens transformed the pier solarium into a recreation room for service members. The salvage committee supplied furnishings and equipment while soldiers provided labor. In October the city council approved converting the cafe area, removing partitions and moving the lunch counter, with painting and wall finishing completed by volunteers.

Promoter A. R. Burke Ends Life in Hollywood Jail
A. R. Burke, Santa Ana promoter with a murky criminal record, hanged himself in a Hollywood police jail cell after arrest on Tuesday. Burke, 41, had risen to notoriety in Orange County circles with a controversial, money-raising scheme tied to a Santa Ana daily. The dramatic end followed his pickup on a warrant from the Santa Ana justice court and prior years of questionable promotions. He began his career in a Tacoma jail in 1924.
