Americanism Awards to Be Presented at Seal Beach Program

The Seal Beach school auditorium hosts an American Legion Auxiliary essay contest awards program Friday night March 13 at 7 30. Six seventh and eighth graders compete for first second and third prizes with subjects on what it means to be American and how to be a better American. Ray Moffitt and Thelma Upham lead the event with guest speaker and prize announcements.

Shamrock Party Prizes Displayed At Local Hardware Store

Prizes for the Star club annual Shamrock party are shown in Seal Beach Hardware window this week and will be added to daily. The event is Tuesday evening March 17 at Civic Auditorium starting at 8. Auction bridge five hundred pinochle and Chinese checkers tables set, with numerous prizes awarded in each game.

Postal Seeks Election to City Council

Frederic W. Postal of 305 Fifteenth Street is the latest candidate to file for city council, joining Dr. Ernest F. Green and Frank A. Krause who filed earlier. City Clerk Ollie B. Padrick reports potential candidates S. S. Silber and Frank D. Moran have taken out papers, with rumors of three more filing before Saturday’s deadline.

Police stop Bay Lane crime wave youths aged 8 to 15

Police arrested four boys aged 8 to 15 for breaking into five houses, ransacking them, stealing valuables and damaging property in the Bay Lane area. They were released to their parents for Juvenile Court hearing likely Friday. Police say the first attempts involved all four, with the last three houses entered by the older trio. Most stolen items, except for damage, have been returned.

Local Red Cross Supports Service Men With Home Touch

With war declared and service members nearby the Seal Beach Red Cross provides comforts of home. Supplies include reading material games and stationery donated or loaned by locals. Women baked pies cakes and cookies for the boys under coordinators Mrs. Edna Shoemaker and previously Mrs. Clarence Brown.

New First Aid Class to Start April 1

Miss Stella Thompson announces a Red Cross first aid class starting Wednesday April 1 at 7 pm in Civic auditorium. Enrollment capped at 80 with priority for the first 30 signups at Red Cross headquarters 219 B Main street.

Earl Whittington Heads Beach Coordinating Group

Captain Earl Whittington of Seal Beach lifeguards was elected president of the Public Beach Coordinating Committee at the Hermosa Beach March meeting. Roy Miller of Long Beach is vice president and Ted Warren of Los Angeles County lifeguards is secretary treasurer. The group foresees greater beach use this summer due to nearby population centers and aims to reduce large parking needs by relying on public transportation.

Civic Betterment Group Pushes Ex-Felon Registration

A civic betterment committee represented by Elizabeth Shea Minnie Snider Grace Haskell Nell Adamson and Jessie Reed asked the city to adopt an ordinance requiring all ex felons to register with the police department. Council referred the matter to City Attorney Burr Brown for investigation and recommendation.

Precincts A and B mapped for April 14 election

City council set up Precinct A at City Hall and Precinct B at 2222 Electric Lane for the April 14 city election. Election officials named for each precinct include inspectors judges and clerks with polling hours 6 am to 7 pm. Building permits in 1942 through two months totaled 79 815 dollars, up from 16 005 a year earlier, with February valuations at 4 185 dollars.</S>

Betty Baker Resigns as Librarian at Seal Beach Library

Betty Baker has resigned after seven years as librarian of the Seal Beach Branch Library to devote time to her home. Mrs Florence Tyler will serve as substitute until a permanent custodian is chosen on April 2.
