Colored veteran sues Lehigh Valley for damages
Duckenon Merryweather, a Black civil war veteran from this city, files a $5,000 damages suit against Lehigh Valley Railroad. He claims on return from a Grant Army encampment in Philadelphia he boarded the Mack Diamond train at Bethlehem, the conductor rejected his ticket, and he had to stay at the depot all night, catching a cold. He learned later at Delaware and Hudson that the ticket was unlimited and the Lehigh Valley conductor erred in not reseating it. Attorneys Wenburg and Dawson represent him. The declaration alleges racial motive behind the rejection.
