Democratic scheme exposed in taxing hypocrisy claims
The McKean county Democrat meeting produced a false tax comparison claiming high local taxes on farms and homeowners, while railroads and telegraphs paid little. The Philadelphia Press is cited to refute state taxes on real estate and trades, stressing local authorities set real estate levies and the state returns funds to counties to ease local burdens rather than taxing individuals. It notes McKean county paid into the state treasury in 1887 but received substantial state allocations, arguing counties benefit from state revenues and the state does not tax farmers directly.
