Telegraph from Galveston to Memphis officials reports 3000 dead, 5000 homeless, widespread destruction leaving churches and schools ruined. Urges immediate relief including food clothing water and asylum spaces for women and children. appeals for relief trains and supplies from New York and other cities.
From Austin dated Sept 1 official Galveston reports to Governor Sayers say 440 identified bodies and 40 more in an improvised morgue. Many drifted at sea with unknown identities. Scurry says conditions in Texas City are dire, etc. US troops and volunteers guard against looting while relief efforts surge.
Governor William A. Stone issues a proclamation calling Pennsylvanians to aid Galveston and Texas after a Calamity. He asks for cash to Drexel Co Philadelphia or clothing to Theodore C. Knanes at the Bourse, with Pennsylvania Railroad donating transport.
Mayor Woodruff issues a proclamation calling for relief funds in Johnstown in response to Galveston and Texas disaster reports. Citizens are urged to donate at city banks with funds already surpassing 190 dollars, to be forwarded to relief authorities.
The Citizens' Permanent Relief Committee in Philadelphia wired 5000 dollars to Governor Sayers of Texas for Galveston storm victims. They named a fund appeal and urged business houses and exchanges to form committees to solicit contributions, with telegraph and railroad firms asked to provide aid at no cost. Mayor Ashbridge reported Governor Stone called to confirm statewide soliciting committees.
Harrisburg telegraphed Governor Stone expressed Pennsylvania citizens sympathy for Texas after a Texas tragedy. He issued a call for contributions and sent a personal mite to Governor Havers.
Philadelphia Sept 1 Republican primaries nominate delegates for offices including judge, treasurer, register of wills, and several congressional and senatorial districts. Fifth district battle between Henry F Walton and Henry Berkelbach dominated turnout with Walton backed by anti-Quay forces and Berkelbach by Mayor Ashbrige allies. Notable noms include J Hampton Moore for treasurer and Thomas K Finletter for common pleas. several incumbents renominated.
Washington reports John McMackin New York labor commissioner testifying on trusts and labor unions. He warned against unchecked trust growth, favored union incorporation for arbitration accountability, and supported compulsory arbitration for critical semi public utilities while noting limited success of state boards.
New York reports arrivals and clearances with vessels including Anehorisa from Cleegon and Westernland Antwerp Teu tonic Liverpool and Kampton. Pateramizes Deutchlind from New and other lines listed among port movements.
Governor Roosevelt arrived in Flandreau and spoke to a large gathering including many Indians. He urged Americans to value hard work and national service, recalling Civil War veterans and past national struggles, while criticizing imperialist labels.
State Senator Samuel Alford Loach of Pennsylvania’s Twenty seventh district died in Atlantic City after a relapse from kidney illness. He served in the Civil War and held several state offices including chief clerk of the house and secretary of New Mexico. He was active in the Grand Army of the Republic and Freemasonry.
James War den Moore, released from Eastern penitentiary in Philadelphia after ten years, was immediately rearrested on Lancaster charges. Detectives and Lancaster Chief George Borger pursued him outside the prison. a pistol report halted his escape. He is jailed at Lancaster Central Station awaiting action by Lancaster authorities. Moore once ran a saloon in Allegheny City.
The Weather Bureau reports the West Indian storm, moving from Texas toward Iowa, has intensified over the past day. It will track northeastward, bringing severe gales to Lake Michigan tonight and to Lakes Michigan and Superior tonight and Wednesday, prompting full port advisories and orders to keep ships in port.
Rome reports the Italian cabinet will begin peace negotiations with China and demand an indemnity. if accepted, Italy would end intervention and reject further war proposals. Li Hung Chang named plenipotentiary with Prince Ching, Kun Yi and Chang-Chi-Tung later discussed. Allies push toward Pao-Ting-Fu as German forces are not mentioned. Washington weighs direct talks with Li Hung Chang and awaits responses to the Russian note as Minister Wu engages with the State Department.
The nineteenth annual national encampment of the Sons of Veterans opens in Syracuse with Commander in Chief A. W. Jones presiding. Ohio lieutenant governor Jones, Iowa ex-Governor Frank D. Jackson, and city officials attend, with a noon adjournment for a carriage tour. the National Aid Society and the Women’s Auxiliary to the Sons of Veterans also hold conventions here.
Two residents died and several were injured in a two story tenement blaze at 205146 Des Plaines Street in Chicago. The dead are James Pulling and three year old Edward Pulling. Injured include Mrs. Anne Pulling Maude Wedlock and others. All victims reportedly lived on the second floor.
The Republican city convention in Reading Pennsylvania nominates Richard Pawling and Captain William G Monger for the council seats. Both candidates are described as strong Quay figures.
Chicago Sept 11 John Mitchell president of the United Mine Workers declares he will strike if no word from New York operators shows willingness to confer. Benjamin James says strike or a satisfactory adjustment is the outcome. Father Phillips travels to rally labor leaders in Philadelphia and Washington. A separate report notes 126 nonunion workers at Beoth Valley colliery strike for higher wages.
Shamokin on Sept 11 reports the Mineral company and the Philadelphia and Reading Coal and Iron Company warned that if workers at the Cameron Burnside and Henry Clay collieries strike long enough to halt operations, mules and front will be withdrawn and the mines abandoned. The three collieries have not paid investments, risking $000 men and boys losing work.
The Colored Odd Fellows stand lodge convened in Wilkes Barre with many delegates present. Mayor Nichola and District President Patterson Molland spoke, urging equal opportunity for Black citizens. A parade is planned in Lazerte county with visiting delegates tomorrow.
The Pressed Steel Car Company received a contract to supply ore cars with a 90 000 pound capacity for use on Spain's Great Southern railway. The order is for supply to Pittabuyr in September.
In a morning edition the paper reports a disaster in Texas causing multiple fatalities and leaving thousands homeless. It mentions demands for indemnity from China and notes political events in Wilkes Barre with a Democratic convention. Local sections cover county reports, fairs, and church gatherings.
The Wilkes-Barre Democratic county meeting erupted into clashes between factions led by ex-State Chairman Garman and John T. Lenahan. Owing to a bad freight wreck on the Cleveland and Pittsburg railroad near East Liverpool the section gang from Smiths Ferry was called out. Nine cars were wrecked including a car of gasoline. While working at the wreck the tank exploded injuring fifteen men. All members of the Smiths Ferry gang were injured with some severely burned James Colone and Thomas Cochran badly burned likely fatal.
A weather forecast notes a warm air stream from the east with potential showers and thunderstorms. Cooler temperatures are expected by Wednesday night, with a high near Thursday. Winds shift from south to wet conditions as the system moves in.
