Trouble in Camp as Spanish War Veterans Fight Admission
The fourteenth annual convention of the national association of naval veterans split over admitting Spanish war veterans. Proponents led by Past Rear Admiral B P Osborn argued for inclusion to keep the group alive beyond Civil War veterans, while Baltimore surgeon A Trego Shertz argued the corps should die with Civil War sailors. The vote against admission prompted a walkout by Farragut delegates and plans for a separate United States Veteran Navy group centered in New York. Outside this, the convention remained otherwise harmonious and the proposed Grand Army parade was defeated.
