Free trade folly and American mills in the Inter Ocean
The Inter Ocean argues against Mr Wilson and the free traders claiming domestic mills cannot meet home demand. It cites 1890s imports exceeding 300 million, says a full year of production suffices only with European fabrics excluded, and asserts tariffs won’t improve conditions. It predicts mills would run three months at most, urging protection of domestic industry.
