Married couple elopement blocked by telegram watch
John Lewis of Yontville and Lingle Beott adopted daughter of Freeman Larned of Moscow faced a court license process interrupted by a telegram from Beott’s father claiming she is under age. Beott insisted she is twenty one, a claim supported by her brother, and the couple left to seek proof elsewhere. The father pursued, unsure if Wilkes-Barre would grant a license, while Mrs Larned objected to Lewis as a son in law.
