Echoes of the War Recruiting and muster plans in Wilkes-Barre
Lieutenant Smiter of the Twelfth Infantry leaves to open a Harrisburg recruiting office and expects to return during the Ninth’s mustering out around Oct 19. He recruited 452 men here, mostly for heavy artillery. 600 applicants were rejected for defects. Dr. Hutchison’s medical exam found few serious heart cases. The case of Newcomb will go to federal court as local courts lack jurisdiction. The Ninth may be mustered out Oct 19 and captains prepare rolls detailing rank changes fines and disciplinary records for justice and payroll needs.
