Bishop John J. Keane, rector of the Catholic University of America in Washington, resigns at the Pope Leo XII’s request. The Pope offers elevation to archbishop and authority to choose between home or abroad postings, with Keane to retire after nine years of service and a period of rest on the Pacific coast.

Mobile October 4 Corn is being shipped from southern ports to Mexico in large quantities due to a corn famine in two Mexican provinces. Mexico removed the import duty two months ago, spurring shipments. From this port alone 1,500,000 bushels have gone to the City of Mexico and Pueblo, far exceeding the total U S exports to Mexico in 1859 which were under 180,000 bushels.
In Ogden near Thirty-fifth Street and Washington Avenue, W. L. Edson shot Miss Lillie tt in the breast and hip, injuring her companion Mr. McCabe who was struck in the arm. The wounded girl is not expected to recover. Edson surrendered after the shooting, jealousy cited as the motive.
