Oil steamer sinks a tug near Schuylkill River junction
The Standard of Philadelphia collided with the tug Fleetwood at the Schuylkill and Delaware rivers causing the Fleetwood to sink. Two crew members, David Strawbridge and Fred Hickman, drowned. Captain A W Strawbridge, his grandson Robert Strawbridge, and Nathan Mattson were rescued in serious condition and hospitalized. Mattson is not expected to live. The Fleetwood capsized after the collision as the Major Barrett continued upriver. The rescue saved the Fleetwood’s captain and two others.
