Attorney Ruddy Opposes Extra Fees for Detectives in Luzerne Case

Ruddy a Miners Mills citizen filed a protest with Luzerne County Commissioners to withhold payment to detectives Quigley and O'Brien beyond standard lawful fees. The petition argues only ordinary 1 per day attendances, 6 cents per mile, 15 cents per name, and 32 cents per mile for subpoenas be paid, plus usual warrants, with any extra charges contested. James T Lenahan, attorney for the detectives, rebutts that the lawyers helped bring killers to justice and deserve compensation. auditors would surcharge improper disbursements if other payments were made. Commissioner statements indicate plans from 1894 to employ extra men may proceed, and some officials may honor reasonable charges for witness travel and related services. The treasurer Reed said he would refuse any special service orders, while county orders aim to reimburse defined costs rather than specific case work.
