Municipal ownership and its limits in England’s towns
A review of Robert I Porter’s Other People's Money argues that English municipal trading has stalled enterprise by using provisional orders to block private competition. It notes many towns seek powers to trade in electrical fittings and other goods, funded by rates, risking taxpayer burden. The piece cites a 1900 Commons vote for a joint committee to study municipal trading and warns against wasteful, protected projects while urging balanced, regulated public works.
