London crowds erupt in joy after a Pretoria dispatch reports Mafeking relieved. Lord Mayor announces the news outside Mansion House as Lord Roberts masss forces and Boer positions are noted in Transvaal reports.
London crowds erupt with cheers as word from the Associated Press arrives announcing the relief of Mafeking. The Mansion House displays the dispatch and streets near it resound with celebratory cheers at 8.40 p m on May 18 as the news spreads.
In Trenton on May 18 the New Jersey department Grand Army of the Republic elected BV Richards of Trenton as department commander and Jonah Coyler Jr of Newark as senior vice commander during the encampment session held in the city.
An exhibition of paintings by the late Marie painter Paul Jean Clave opens in Brureels and will run through May 20. A public sale of pieces is planned for May 2 and 3.

About thirty attend Towne says I am not a Populist and Bryan's party seeks reform by outside candidates.
A condensed shipping notice reports ships arriving at New York from Hamburg and Boulogne with entries for Manelan and La Champagne among others, and vessels sailing from Haine tam Cherbourg to New York via Liverpool, plus arrivals of Spaarndam and Kaiser Friedrich in New York. The terse list mentions ports including Boulogne Campania Cherbourg Hamburg Liverpool and Rotterdam.
A reported stage hold up occurred in Stockton California on a May night at Fig Neck flat. A highwayman targeted a Wells Margo company treasure box but did not touch the treasure or harm the passengers. The women aboard were not molested and the incident remained under investigation.
