Miners Seek Eight Hour Day as NY, Ontario and Western Talks Continue

The grievance committee of the New York Ontario and Western Railroad pressed wage scale raises and an eight hour day during a meeting with Superintendent Bryden. He said he would forward the miners’ wage demands to New York headquarters for a reply. Disparities between washeries and collieries fuels concerns over shifts, with washeries running up to twelve shifts and collieries often four. Union leaders doubt whether broad concessions will be granted given current coal market strain and prior agreements.
