Cannon Ball Lifesaving Hero of Ayrshire Wreck Revealed

A twenty four pound cannon ball with a short chain rests on the table of General Superintendent Kimball. It is believed to be the largest ball used in lifesaving in the United States, recovered from the Ayrshire wreck after twenty three years buried in sand and sea. The Ayrshire, sailing from Newry to New York with 202 passengers, was driven ashore in June 1850 during a northeast tempest. A life boat and a small iron ark saved most aboard, but Mr Bell of New York drowned when refused space inside the ark. The ball’s discovery recalls a long forgotten but noble rescue mission by early lifesaving crews.
