A New York despatch dated March 13 quotes President Kruger via Berlin stating burghers will fight to the end, forces are returning to defense on South African soil, Natal campaign favored them, British will not reach Pretoria, and that Steyn Joubert and Kruger are united with no differences, with God’s help.
Moreland secretary of Carnegie Steel company filed his answer in the Frick case. He states he is successor to Lovejoy and has read Carnegie's answer. The equity suit by Walker et al seeks annulment of the coke contract between Frick Coke and Carnegie Steel. Proceedings move toward Common Pleas Court No 2. time extensions for filings may be sought. In Washington, the president commuted the sentence of William Steele, late cashier of Chestnut Street Bank, Philadelphia, from six years and months to eighteen months. Steele’s role was limited to aiding an officer. he did not partake in the misappropriation.
Gabriel Taul of Breckenridge was discharged today in Frankfort Kentucky as detectives report there is nothing in the charge against him regarding the Goebel murder.

The trial of John F. Riordan, Lackawanna engineer, ended in acquittal on a manslaughter indictment. He was accused of negligence in the Buffalo express crash near Paterson on Thanksgiving Eve that killed seven and wounded thirty. The defense argued the railroad’s management and lack of signals caused the collision.
Baltimore March 14 Captain H F Crosby of the schooner Joseph Luther from Heston was burned to death in a fire aboard the schooner J W Lennon where he was visiting Captain Handy. Handy was badly burned while attempting rescue. The Lennon suffered considerable damage.

Mrs Bertha Richter identified as Mrs Brown of 604 North Hamlin avenue is hospitalized with a bullet wound in the right lung. Dr Ostrowski of 279 South Halstead street is arrested after claiming the shooting was accidental. A revolver with one chamber discharged was found at his apartment. Mrs Richter is in critical condition and declined to identify her attacker.
In a violent outburst at 1421 Twenty fourth Street N W Norwegian immigrant Olof Pallesen 36 stabbed his wife Jonsepisine Hengelbach and their five year old daughter Mary at their home. He then fatally wounded bystander Elizabeth Mengesbach and stabbed the mother. The motive remains unclear. Police arrested him as the mother and child died.
J Sherman Pfeffer son of former U S senator W A Pfeffer was found dead in a Kansas City lodging house. A mor phine box and a note saying Father I dont like to do what I am doing but I am tired were found on him. A printer and linotype operator, Pfeffer was about 30 and had recent despondency. several typographical union cards were in his pockets. He entered the lodging house last night around 11 and apparently died several hours before discovery.
The Prince and Princess of Wales made a surprise visit to a West End restaurant started by Sir Lipton's Alexandria trust. They bought 14 pence dinners, shared standard meals, toured the premises, and were greeted with an ovation by working people.
Five hundred miners at A J Davia colliery Warrior Run strike over docking rates. Three hundred miners and drivers at Susquehanna Coal No 2 mine in Nanticoke refuse to work to press grievances against alleged discrimination for joining a big strike. Until resolved the colliery remains idle, about 800 workers affected.
The state department approved three new corporate charters. Yardley Electric Light, Heat and Power Company of Yardley with capital 25 000. Thompson Sons of Philadelphia with capital 90 900. Pittsburg Feed Water Heater Company of Pittsburg with capital 90 000. Mountain Gas Company of Kane with capital 33 000.
Washington March 14 The Coeur d Alene hearing before the house committee on military affairs uncovered spirited exchanges between Chairman Hull and Representative Lentz over a witness Cornell who described an old soldier mocked for his brutality by black soldiers and who cast aside his grand army button in tears. Sinclair denied the soldier’s existence as Lentz sought production of records. executive session delayed immediate disclosure. Cornell later testified of prison-like barns and harsh treatment, and an officer threatening miners with bayonet if they quit work. Military authorities asserted control over civil authorities as proceedings adjourned.
The opening session of the Central Pennsylvania conference of the Methodist Episcopal church convened at St. Pauls church Hazleton with Bishop Daniel Goodsell presiding. Secretary Wilcox and Treasurer John Harning were re elected. A five member committee investigates Rev D H Shields former army chaplain case.

The Temps though argues Salisbury’s reply signals war to conquer and annex, a death struggle to resist a forced entry that England should fear. It says foreign powers would not intervene after the United States example.
News from Seattle reports the steamer Wolcott struck a rock ten miles from Kodiak on January 31 and was a total loss. The Excelsior arrived from Alaska with word that the crew, passengers, and most cargo were saved.
Washington announces pension car dates under February 2 with increases to ten dollars for Clark Haker of New Albany and W Oplinger of Plains. Lu gerne and A N Carot of Trereho Busquehanna show raises from six to seven dollars. Daniel Lampher of Myersbore Bradford rises from eleven to eighteen dollars. Michael J. Cassidy longtime warden of the Eastern Penitentiary of Pennsylvania died in Philadelphia at 71. He joined the system in 1872 as an overseer and became warden in 1881, shaping separate confinement policy and earning international recognition through prison congress work and a Paris pamphlet that influenced French reform.
Elmira announces the death of Rev. Thomas K. Beecher aged 81 after paralysis on his way home from church. Separately in Hartford Mrs. Mary Perkins, aged 9 years 9 months, dies at son Charles Perkins home. she is linked to Rev. Lyman Beecher and the Beecher family, sharing kin with Harriet Beecher Stowe and Catherine Beecher.
Shamokin, March 4. At a meeting of J Langdon & Co mining operators it was decided to abandon the Neilson shaft between April 1 and 1. Mules pumps and rail will be removed to the surface as soon as possible. Five hundred employes will be idle. The operation has suffered financial losses due to several mine fires.
Marrizburg March W L Murray Graydon a senior Dauphin County attorney died at his home after a lingering illness. He was 66 and father of William Murray Graydon, author. Kalamasco Kalamazoo reports Lu cinda H Stone, noted club matron and writer, died today at Kalamazoo College where she and her husband once tutored.
Republican senators in caucus reached a partial agreement on Puerto Rico legislation. A $2,000,000 relief appropriation will be acted on immediately, while a civil government bill should be disposed of soon, and a tariff measure delayed as a seven member committee works to bridge revenue bill differences. Senator Foraker urged swift action. Senator Elkins favored delaying government decisions, citing military rule as preferable. Several speakers supported pursuing immediate relief and keeping governmental features intact, with debate focusing on revenues, governance, and the tariff.
