Reading railroad purchases gain and tariff dispute erupts
The Reading railroad reports last week shipments of 40,541 tons, up 140,799 tons from last year and 45,481 tons from the prior week. It notifies Jersey Central and Lehigh Valley lines that after March 11 the through coal rate will be replaced by an arbitrary Reading rate for coal moved by foreign firms. President Harris says receivers aim to reduce costs and adjust freight divisions, arguing prior local concessions to other lines harmed Reading coal. The Philadelphia Inquirer notes Reading’s long dominance of city coal consumption and questions about profits from allowing rival roads into the market.

A widow with limited income requests a residence with a servant, and a wash and ironing service ad lists North Summer Avenue, Hyde Park.
