McKinley-Hobart Nominated at Republican Convention

At St Louis on June 18 the Republican National Convention nominated William McKinley of Ohio for president and Garret Hobart of New Jersey for vice president after ten hours of heated debate. Rifts over the silver issue faded as party leaders pledged loyalty and urged unity. The event closed with Hobart’s nomination confirmed and the convention adjourned.

Canton, Ohio June 18. The 918 delegates in Canton marked McKinley’s nomination with loud fire alarm bells cannons steam whistles and trumpets. Citizens cheered by the streets and at the McKinley home as long-distance bulletins from St Louis streamed in and Ohio’s vote at 6:19 affirmed the result. McKinley received visitors while the crowd surged toward the house in joyous celebration.
