Pennsylvania Hews Slaughter in the House Ends Several Measures

Harrisburg dispatch reports the Pennsylvania legislature killed the bicycle bill and many senate measures amid a strong sentiment to end the session early. The house defeated the cycle tax bill 67 to 70 and postponed or defeated several other bills on third reading while the senate extended time for an oleomargarine investigation only to see the resolution sent back to the house. The Campbell bill imposing a tax on unnaturalized foreigners was signed by Governor Hastings, and disputes over fence laws and other measures kept the chamber in an uproar as lawmakers planned further action tomorrow.

The 1895 act is deemed too narrow to authorize such an amendment, so the department's denial is sustained. The ruling prevents new corporations from entering wholesale liquor trade.
