The National Silver convention opened in St John Kansas with Chairman St John presiding at 10:27 AM. Charles A. Towne of Minnesota was greeted as he praised Bryan and attacked the McKinley tariff while debates on money, prices, and reform created a tense scene among delegates before a noon recess.
Chairman St John presided as the silver convention met in St Towls with more ladies present than ever but fewer delegates. Speakers included Dr J J Mott and C D Lane a California delegate and gold miner. Lane pledged to spend all his money for the cause while defending his silver stance amid calls for a state roll vote and a day’s end tally.
Des Moines July 23. The Mississippi and Missouri Valley Hardware association met with about forty leaders from St. Paul Minneapolis Omaha Kansas City Duluth and other cities. They passed non partisan resolutions opposing free coinage of silver at 14 to 1 arguing it would ruin farmers laborers professionals and merchants.
A Chicago report details a conference of Democratic leaders from nine states including Wisconsin Michigan Indiana Missouri Kentucky Ohio Iowa and Nebraska. They urged a second nominating convention to oppose free silver and support a Democratic ticket with a president and vice president to be chosen by September 2. A Shelby of Michigan resolution was adopted authorizing a committee from each represented state to report at 10 tomorrow morning.
Joseph Allen of Elgin, aged about two years, died after a fight among fifteen prisoners in a large cage at the county jail. Sheriff Richerdyon fired a pistol at inmates who refused to enter cells, the steel ceiling plate struck Allen, causing instant death. Coroner's jury exonerated the jailer.
Delegates from Jewish women councils gather in New York for a four day national convention. President Hannah G. Solomon of Chicago will speak on opening day. Welcoming remarks and various addresses are scheduled from New York leaders and delegates as the organization expands and gains rabbinic esteem.
Mrs Misse’an Nie Reid of Pana and Frank Kenyon a prominent Indianapolis businessman were secretly married last January in Indianapolis. The couple kept the match private with Mrs Reid using her maiden name when visiting family in Pana. Kenyon arrived to announce the marriage and escort his wife home.
Thomas N. Appleby of Springfield Missouri commits suicide in an undertaking home. Once a prominent figure, he had fallen with Mrs. Joseph Walton, left his wife for her, and later killed Walton in a defense claim before being acquitted.
New York reports in the Middle States today a partly cloudy sky with slowly rising temperatures and light northwesterly winds shifting to southerly. Local rain is possible this evening tonight and on Saturday expect partly cloudy sultry weather with fresh southerly and southeasterly winds and higher temperatures followed by local rain.
Delegates convene in St Louis as credentials and seats are disputed. The majority and minority reports split on Cook county seats while Iowa and Illinois delegates clash over representation. After chaotic ballots, the majority seating is adopted and James Campion and Allen receive support for permanent chair. Bryan faction cheers rise as Allen is named.

Philadelphia crowds gave the most applause with strong interest in the uniformed soldiers. Tonight Company B H marched to the First’s quarters for a royal reception and the Thirteenth will provide tomorrow’s division guard.
