Major Wood and Adjutant Coursen led a mock combat at Camp Alger with Stillwell’s First Battalion in woods and Wood’s Second battalion attacking. The plan faltered when right flank troops broke cover, but Wood still secured a strong position. A notable feat was the risky reconnoitering by Major Wood and Coursen to observe the enemy from within their lines. Water shortages persist as artesian wells fail and water is bought by the barrel.
