Excursion Train Brings Former Residents To City
A special trip from Buffalo via the Delaware Lackawanna and Western yesterday brought about one hundred former residents to visit friends and relatives. A machinist, formerly at the Lackawanna Iron and Steel plant earning 2.25 dollars daily, now earns 2.75 dollars. The steel company recently awarded a contract for 450 six and eight room houses for workers on company property. Despite higher rent and living costs, wage gains offset them due to lower steel-making costs at the new plant. The works closed Thursday night and will reopen Monday, allowing guests to stay over until tomorrow night.
