Two shoplifters were arrested on Saturday in New York. Marguerite Passo wore a heavy split front skirt used to hide and drop stolen gloves, handkerchiefs, and cheap jewelry from different dry goods stores. The garment surprised police with its novel concealment design.

London January 20 United Press says admiralty has authority that no information about the flying squadron’s movements has been given to anyone. The foreign office will issue a communication denying any exchange of naval questions with the United States regarding the fleet.
Kingston Jamaica January 20 Advices show Hayti elections passed calmly government candidates won in most towns except Cayes. President Hippo lite tightened measures to prevent outbreaks and is said to seek a second term after being elected in May 1890 for seven years, expiring in 1897.
The Venezuelan commission, led by Justice Brewer, met at 11:30 a.m. in the Inter-State Commerce Commission building. Mallet Prevost of New York was formally ratified as executive officer. he will assume duties Wednesday. The group published a letter to Secretary Olney inviting information from the two governments on the boundary dispute.

The sub committee meeting in St Louis for the June 16 convention accepted the presented proxies. T B Byrnes was elected sergeant at arms and George N Wissell and W W Johnson were named first and second assistants. The Business Men's league contract for St Louis was ratified and the convention hall plans were reviewed with a revised Exposition hall layout and new spectator galleries. Anna Royster daughter of a Boone Iowa farmer who saw her lover killed by her father shot Banker McFarland. She arrived in Omaha with a companion three days earlier staying at the Midland hotel without registering. At midnight a companion found her dead beside a bed and a letter explained she could not live since her father killed her lover.
London reports Coomassie, capital of Ashanti, was peacefully occupied by the British expeditionary force at 1 PM on Friday January 17. A dispatch from Coomassie says native forces allied with the British entered first and King Prempeh was ordered to meet Sir Francis Scott, commander of the expedition.
Joe Choynski of California defeated Australia’s Jim Hall in a twenty round bout at the Empire Athletic Club to a KO at 1 13 of the thirteenth round after a hard fought fight in Maspeth L I Jan 20. Tim Hurst officiated as referee before a large crowd. The undercard featured a six round bout where Jack Downey beat Johnny Gorman by decision in a brisk contest.

Richmond January 20. Senator Mushback of Alexandria introduces a sweeping bill to prohibit bucket shops and speculation in margins in the state. The measure aims to halt bucket shop activity and margin trades and appears to counter efforts to suppress pool selling at race tracks.
