Washington Jan 3 Mr W O W Sterling of Johannesburg visits Washington. He believes England backs South Africa claims and plans to sell the country. Discontent stems from Cape British investors demanding heavy import duties on machinery. About five hundred Americans live in Johannesburg. A July Fourth celebration there ended in clashes as Boers and English parts clashed.
Chicago January. Van Winkle of C F Van Winkle & Co says grand jurors who indicted him demanded 250 to avoid indictment. He alleges other commission firms were approached for hush money and hints that some paid or settled, while he offers to testify against the jurors.
A January blaze at the six story Central Hotel on Eleventh Avenue Altoona PA killed Frank Houseman a long time railroad fireman and injured several others as walls collapsed. The fire also destroyed adjacent structures and caused extensive property damage estimated around 140000 with several occupants and workers endangered in the inferno.
